Phonics (RWInc.)

At NET we follow the ‘Read Write Inc.’ programme for phonics in EYFS and KS1.

“Read Write Inc. provides a structured and systematic approach to teaching reading and is designed to create fluent readers, confident speakers and willing writers.”

Read Write Inc. Phonics programme provides a structured and systematic approach to early reading and writing. This evidence-based scheme supports pupils in developing essential phonics skills, including letter-sound recognition, blending, segmenting, and decoding, enabling them to read with fluency and confidence.

The programme is carefully sequenced, allowing children to build on prior learning and progress at an appropriate pace. Daily, engaging lessons combine interactive teaching, guided practice, and high-quality texts to foster both reading comprehension and a love of reading. Read Write Inc. also supports writing development, helping pupils apply their phonics knowledge to spell accurately and write independently.

Through consistent assessment and targeted support, the programme ensures that every pupil, including those who may need additional intervention, achieves their full potential in reading and writing. Our aim is to equip children with strong literacy foundations that will underpin their future academic success.

We are determined to follow the programme with fidelity to ensure our children make at least the expected progress in reading in KS1. We formally assess each child half termly which determines their grouping for the coming half term. Any child who is reading below the expected levels are immediately identified and offered 1:1 tutoring.

Daily sessions

Phonics is taught each day for 45 minutes. Children are grouped according to their most recent assessment and reading teachers can flag children who are making accelerated progress or who are a cause for concern. Each session must start with a 20-minute speed sound lesson where a new sound is taught and children have the opportunity to read words containing that sound. These sounds are then reviewed regularly.

1:1 tutoring

To ensure all pupils achieve their potential, we provide 1:1 tutoring by giving targeted support to develop confidence and accelerate progress in reading and writing. This personalised approach ensures that every child can access the curriculum and close gaps in learning.
