Young Carers

Young carers are children and young people under 18 years old who provide regular and on-going care to another person who is physically or mentally ill, disabled or misuses substances.

At Jerounds Primary Academy we aim to educate staff about young carers and their responsibilities, in order to recognise the difficulties that these may pose for them daily in school.

Whilst we are aware that young carers may face challenges in school, such as lateness, tiredness, anxiety and difficulty in concentrating; we also recognise that young carers can be resilient, self-motivated, well organised and tolerant of people different to them.

We support our young carers through building compassionate and understanding relationships with the young carer and the wider family; making referrals to Essex Young Carers; sign posting them to relevant services with the support of our Family Liaison Officer and providing social, emotional and mental health support.
